NYC is About to Survey the Homeless: Veterans Are Going Out There to Find Their Own

NEW YORK, NY — On the night of Tuesday, January 27, 2026, as the City of New York conducts its annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE), a collective of former service members from Five Borough Veterans will be on the ground with a clear mission: ensuring no veteran is left behind on the streets. The HOPE count is a citywide effort to survey New Yorkers experiencing street homelessness to better coordinate housing and outreach resources. While the citywide volunteers focus on the general population, Five Borough Veterans is deploying a dedicated group to act as a bridge for their brothers and sisters in arms who are currently unhoused. "We understand the bond of service. A veteran living on the street is often more likely to engage with someone who has shared that bond," said Michael Matos, President of Five Borough Veterans. "While the city counts the thousands on our streets, we are going out there to make sure our members are seen, counted, and brought home to safety and stability."

The organization offers two ways for the veteran community to participate: joining a central, unified group at a primary borough site or volunteering at a site closer to their own neighborhood. By mobilizing across the city, the group aims to provide a friendly face and a familiar voice to veterans during the coldest hours of the night.
